Though calligraphy is currently enjoying a revival, most people are familiar only with popular pointed pen lettering styles. However, there are so many other types of calligraphy to be enjoyed! Italic is (in the words of calligrapher Gillian Hazeldine) "probably the most important script for the modern calligrapher as it is capable of almost endless variation, able to express on the page a huge range of emotions." This adaptable, beautiful script is also a joy to write.
Students in this introductory class will learn about the history of Italic, become familiar with the tools and materials used for this script, and learn basic strokes as well as the lowercase letters of the alphabet-- first with a pencil and finally with a steel nib.
Students will leave class with detailed exemplars (including an uppercase exemplar for home study) and all necessary calligraphy supplies. No calligraphy experience is needed -- beginners welcome! Intermediate students will benefit from guided review by an experienced instructor.
